State to review port expansion plan

State to review port expansion plan

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 17, 2008

The Sun Herald, 6/17/8

A revised expansion strategy for the Port of Gulfport has been sent to the state for review, but officials are being tight-lipped as to exactly what’s in the new plan.

Gov. Haley Barbour said the Port of Gulfport should consider a southward expansion instead of its most recent plan to go west, and he wanted a decision in “weeks, not months.”

This week marks the four-month anniversary of the governor’s statements, made during an interview with the Sun Herald.

For the most part the port plan is complete and has been sent to the Mississippi Development Authority for review, officials said. The MDA, a state agency that answers directly to Barbour, is overseeing the use of $600 million to expand the port.
