State convention elects Democratic delegates

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 9, 2008

The Sun Herald, 6/8/8

The Mississippi Democratic Party on Saturday held its state convention and candidates in the upcoming elections, including a former governor and the winner of a special Congressional election, spoke to the enthusiastic crowds.

Mississippi’s newest congressman, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, who represents north Mississippi, and U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove headlined the event at Jackson State University, which drew about 600 delegates and spectators.

Mississippi Democrats will send 33 pledged delegates and seven superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August. The state convention came on the day Sen. Hillary Clinton accepted defeat and endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination. Obama is the nation’s first black nominee and Saturday many wore hats and stickers bearing his name.
