Special session: A useless taxpayer expense

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 20, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 5/20/8

MISSISSIPPI TAXPAYERS SHOULD TAKE NO JOY — nor let lawmakers forget – that the special session Gov. Haley Barbour has called for Wednesday is an extravagance.

State lawmakers boasted they would be able to adjourn before the 125 days allotted for the regular session and still be able to do their work. .

Before the session started, in fact, newly elected Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said he planned to try cutting the 125-day session to 90 days, but backed off that proposal for a middle ground of 104 days. Bryant said that could save $500,000 that “could go toward education, public safety, health care.”
