North Mississippi to finally get its congressman

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 20, 2008

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 5/20/8

Booneville’s Travis Childers is expected to take the oath as Mississippi’s newest U.S. House member today.

Family and friends have traveled to the nation’s capital for the ceremony to officially seat the former Prentiss County chancery clerk to represent the 1st Congessional District. The self-described conservative Democrat succeeds Tupelo’s Roger Wicker, a Republican who resigned the seat in December to be appointed a U.S. senator.

As of late Monday, the May 13 special runoff election results still had not been certified in DeSoto County, home of Childers’ campaign opponent, Southaven Mayor Greg Davis. Twenty-three other counties in the district had completed certifications by Thursday.

But Childers is expected to proceed with his oath on the basis of unofficial results supplied by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office, so long as the results aren’t under protest or other questions.
