Gov. Haley Barbour has set a special session for Wednesday to take up a host of issues, including the reauthorization of the Department of Employment Security and a prohibition on the expansion of casino gambling.
The 2008 regular session ended with the understanding that the Legislature probably would be called back to take up at least Employment Security reauthorization and a shortfall of about $90 million in the Division of Medicaid.
Barbour announced the special session late Friday.
“He has so many subjects that it won’t be a real quick special session,” said House Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi. “I don’t know how long it will last. It might be three days. It might be a week.”
Other subjects in the special session are technical changes to the state’s toll road law to make it more attractive for private companies to use the law, and legislation to make it more difficult to sell stolen copper. He also wants to prohibit casino expansion beyond counties that already have casinos or have been approved for them in the past.
