Dowdy: A Democrat will still win the Senate

Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party, issued the following statement after the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that a U.S. Senate election to replace Trent Lott should be in November.

“I respectfully disagree with the court’s decision,” Dowdy said. “We had hoped that the people would be permitted to vote as soon as possible and elect a senator rather than have a politician appoint someone to serve for a long period of time.

“Nevertheless, a Democrat will win this election in November. Once Mississippians seriously look at the candidates for this seat, they will see that interim Sen. Roger Wicker is not the person our state needs in this important office.

“Sen. Wicker is wrong on issues that matter such as ethics, jobs and veterans’ health care. Just today, Sen. Wicker cast the deciding vote against a bipartisan economic stimulus bill that would send checks of at least $500 to taxpayers including seniors and disabled veterans.

“Our Democratic candidates know all about these and other important issues. They are strong candidates with high ethics. They have a strong track record of attracting business and industry to Mississippi. And they understand the importance of caring for our veterans.”
