Flap over Lott’s seat may be headed to court

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 20, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger, 12/20/7

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood insists his dispute with Gov. Haley Barbour over when a special election should be called to replace former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott is not a partisan issue.

At the same time, Hood, a Democrat, said he is preparing to take the Republican governor to court to force him to set the vote for Lott’s replacement within the next 100 days.

“We have a constitutional right to vote for the people who represent us. I’ve got a duty to protect that, instead of (voters) having to wait nine months and allow somebody to represent them that they didn’t vote for,” he said.
