Hurricane account mostly untapped

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 3, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger, 9/3/7

A hurricane recovery fund created by Gov. Haley Barbour has allocated all of the $34 million it raised in the two years since Hurricane Katrina leveled the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

But most of the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund, created as a fund for longer-term relief, has not been spent. No more than $2 million has been distributed since the account was established in the days after Katrina in 2005, said William Richardson, whom Barbour appointed to oversee it. The storm’s second anniversary was Wednesday.
