Jeremy Martin’s legacy: Hood, Franks still sending a message
Seems it wasn’t good enough for Franks to beat Martin by eight percent of the vote with a 3-t0-1 campaign fund advantage. No, Hood and Franks wanted to “send a message.”
Forget that Hood later dropped the prosecution of Martin after the school teacher agreed to pay a $300 civil penalty and turn in an amended campaign finance report. Forget that there’s a long list of candidates in violation of that same statute over at the secretary of state’s office right now.
Forget that Hood and Franks haven’t raised a whimper against Ike Brown’s voter discrimination.
But Jeremy Martin? Hood told the Clarion-Ledger on Feb. 5, 2005, that he wanted to “send a message” in the case: “We hope this sends a message to any other cowardly candidates who want to send out some nasty mailout or negative ad against their opponent. They should think twice before violating our campaign finance laws.”
