With his nomination to a federal appeals court stalled by the opposition of key Democrats, Mississippi Judge Leslie Southwick is in Washington this week trying to save his candidacy.
Southwick met Wednesday with Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl, a moderate Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. But Joe Bonfiglio, Kohl’s press secretary, said Thursday the senator has signalled his skepticism that the nomination can move forward.

US and China take a step back from sky-high tariffs, agree to pause for 90 days
The U.S. has agreed to drop its 145% tariff rate on Chinese goods by 115 percentage points to 30%, while China has agreed to lower its rate on U.S. goods by the same amount to 10%.
