Insurance reform, improving daily operations in the state Senate and illegal immigration were among topics candidates tackled at the Mississippi Press Association meeting.

Democratic Rep. Jamie Franks and Republicans Auditor Phil Bryant and Sen. Charlie Ross are vying to be elected leader of the state Senate. Ross and Bryant, both Brandon residents, face each other in an Aug. 7 primary.
