Insurance commissioner seeks run as an Independent at hearing on Dem status

A hearing intended to determine if Insurance Commissioner George Dale can seek reelection as a Democrat took a different twist when Dale?s attorney asked the court to let him run as an Independent.

?Does this court have the power to grant that?? Calhoun County Judge Henry Lackey, appointed to hear the case, said.

Executive committee members of the Democratic party booted Dale last month after questioning his loyalty. Dale, who has held his office since 1975 as a Democrat, voted for President George Bush in 2004.

At a hearing today in Jackson, an attorney for the Democratic Party said Dale would be allowed to be certified as a Democrat. But Dale?s attorney said media coverage of the case ?has affected and diminished his ability to win the Democratic primary election.?

Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Dowdy then withdrew the offer to allow Dale to be certified as a Democrat.
