Melton’s pick for chief is no one-woman show (06/22/2005)
With intense brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair, five-foot-two Shirlene Anderson, was recently announced as mayor-elect Frank Melton’s pick for the Jackson Police Department’s police chief.
Anderson, the former deputy director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics (MBN), must still be approved by the seven-member City Council.
Anderson divulged a little about herself before a recent meeting of The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), an organization she said is very close to her heart.
Anderson served under Melton during his stint as head of the MBN from 2002 to 2004, and has worked in law enforcement for nearly 30 years. Anderson will replace Robert Moore, whose contract ends June 30, and will take over a force of nearly 500 officers.
