Race played its usual role in Mississippi voting this month
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 11/20/8 The Nov. 4 election did more than result in the election of the first African-American president. It well could have sounded the death knell of the Nixon-era-born Republican Southern Strategy that for three decades converted the once-solid Democratic South to a GOP bastion. Mississippi began soldiering along with…

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/20/8 When then-state Attorney General Mike Moore was the first to successfully sue Big Tobacco for its responsibility in smoking-related illnesses, it appeared Mississippi would lead the nation in such health issues. Whatever it is isn’t enough in Saban’s world What is, is. Sometimes that sounds like a cop-out, an act of resignation, as if to say, “nothing is going to change, so why talk about it?” It is one of Alabama coach Nick Saban’s favorite answers when he is asked one of those hypothetical questions he…

Attorneys want Seale released from prison
The Clarion-Ledger, 11/19/8 A reputed Ku Klux Klansman should not face months of “potentially unnecessary and unlawful imprisonment” as the government appeals his acquittal in the kidnappings of two black teenagers found dead in 1964, his attorneys argue. James Ford Seale, 73, was convicted last year on kidnapping and conspiracy charges in the abductions of…

Tobacco study critical of Miss.
The Clarion-Ledger, 11/19/8 Mississippi was the first in the nation to sue the tobacco industry in the 1990s but spends about a fourth of what a Washington-based advocacy group says it should on tobacco-prevention efforts. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, in a report released Tuesday, ranks Mississippi 23rd in the nation for its funding of…

Before a council chamber filled with city workers, officials exchanged heated remarks and then voted down the plan in a 3-3 vote. It was the…

Barbour budget spares MAEP
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 11/19/8 Gov. Haley Barbour’s 2010 budget recommendations include use of the rainy day fund and higher cigarette taxes, but they still cut many agencies by 4 percent over what they were appropriated during the 2009 legislative session.
