Daily Devotional: Keeping Near
Spiritual drift is a constant and often unnoticed danger in our spiritual lives. In order to prevent us from drifting and abandoning the love we had at first (Revelation 2:4), the writer of Hebrews warns and invites us to “pay … closer attention to what we have heard”—namely, the message of the gospel. When we immerse ourselves daily in the reading and memorizing of God’s word, our affections are stirred, and our gaze remains fixed on Jesus’ atoning work on the cross.

When Doubts and Fears Assail Us
So what are we to do about the doubts and fears that assail us? We must fix our gaze on the Lord Jesus Himself. When we look at ourselves, we have good reason for discouragement and trepidation. It is by looking to Jesus that we are enabled to run the race set before us. He endured the cross, scorned its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2), that we might be forgiven and continue through our days.

Marked by Newness
Paul cautioned the church because he understood the pressure for the believers in 1st-century Rome to accommodate themselves to the lifestyle and the values of the pagan world around them. We face the same challenge in our day.
