Report: U.S. government may subpoena as many as 104 MLB players

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3401868 As many as 104 Major League Baseball players could be subpoenaed by federal investigators in connection with the BALCO steroid distribution case after the United States attorney's office obtained positive steroid test results from 2003, according to a published report. The results, according to The New York Times, were part of the 2003 tests conducted by Major League Baseball that were intended to be anonymous. But through some deft legal maneuvering, the U.S. government seized the records from two different companies hired to provide the tests. An anonymous source told the newspaper that the federal government plans to question all 104 players about their positive steroid tests and how they obtained whatever substance was found in their urine sample. The potential list of suppliers named by the players would be sent to federal prosecutors around the country. The investigations that result from that information could lead to player names being revealed in court documents. ESPN.com 5/18/08

Big Brown waits patiently, then charges off with Preakness win

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/triplecrown08/news/story?id=3401275 BALTIMORE -- Not once but twice, jockey Kent Desormeaux sneaked a peak to see if anyone was gaining on Big Brown. "I looked between my legs, under my arms, and they were eight [lengths] behind me," Desormeaux said. "I stopped pushing. I said, 'That's enough.' " His big bay colt ran away with the Preakness on Saturday and now is pointed squarely down the path toward the Triple Crown. The 3-year-old with the perfect record heads for the Belmont Stakes (ABC, June 7) in three weeks as the fourth horse this decade to try for the triple, a sweep last accomplished by Affirmed in 1978. The last to try was Smarty Jones in 2004. ESPN.com 5/18/08

LSU’s Miles assembling another strong class

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080518/SPORTS/805180313/1001 BATON ROUGE -- On signing day 2008 when LSU finished with the No. 11 class in the nation, according to both Rivals.com and ESPN.com, LSU coach Les Miles said the best time to get a No. 1 class or close to it is the year after winning the national championship - not the month. "I don't know that winning the (2007) national championship got us in on anybody specifically on the back end," Miles said. "I'm told, and as I look at it, I agree, that after you have identified the national champion from last year, the recruitment then of next year, there's a real advantage to being the defending national champions. And I think that's something that we'll look forward to as we go into the next recruiting season." It's happening. LSU's class of 2009 is off to a national championship start with 11 commitments, including six ranked in the Rivals.com top 202. Four of those are from out of state. Shreveporttimes.com 5/18/08

Upshaw says union expects ‘greedy’ owners to opt out of labor deal

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3401268 Gene Upshaw called NFL owners, who are ready to opt out of the current labor deal, "greedy." "In their mind, a loss means they didn't make as much [money] as they thought they were going to make," said Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association, during a panel discussion at the Sports Lawyers Association annual conference on Saturday. The NFL owners and players reached the agreement in 2006, but both sides have the option of reopening it by Nov. 8. Upshaw said the owners could notify the players they are reopening the deal on Tuesday in Atlanta, a move that could result in a 2011 work stoppage. ESPN.com 5/18/08
