Tuesday’s election in Mississippi saw extremely low voter turnout. Less than 5500 voters cast a ballot in the Republican runoff in the 2nd Congressional District and less than 2300 voted in a special election to fill a seat in the state House of Representatives.

Brian Flowers defeated Thomas Carey to advance as the Republican nominee in November’s General Election for the 2nd Congressional District. Flowers tallied just under 70% of the vote.
Flowers will face longtime incumbent Democrat Congressman Bennie Thompson. Saying it will be an uphill battle for the Republican is an understatement, as the district heavily favors Thompson.

HD 88
Robin Robinson will be the newest member of the Mississippi Legislature once the election is certified and she is sworn-in. She defeated Michael Walker in the House District 88 special election gaining over 65% of the vote.
Robinson replaces Ramona Blackledge who resigned in January less than a month into the new term. The new freshman legislator will serve the remainder of the term that expires in January 2024.
While the special election was non-partisan, Robinson has touted her conservative prinicples and is expected to caucus with the Republican majority in the House. Her husband, Sam Britton, served as a Republican during his term as Southern District Public Service Commissioner.
