WLBT – State Treasurer Lynn Fitch announces run for Mississippi Attorney General
State Treasurer Lynn Fitch tells an audience again Thursday she will be a Republican candidate for Mississippi Attorney General next year.
Fitch first made the announcement back in May. Fitch was among state leaders and candidates speaking Thursday at the Economic Council’s HobNob Mississippi at the Coliseum.
Fitch reaffirmed her intention to run for AG.

But the most fiery speech came from a candidate for Mississippi governor — which isn’t on the ballot until next year. Democrat Jim Hood, the current attorney general, said despite the rosy picture the state’s Republican leadership paints, Mississippi’s economy, its number of jobs and employment rate, and its salaries, lag behind neighboring states and the rest of the nation.
“Our economy is not moving,” he said.
The candidate told the crowd of about 1,000 business leaders that he has received support from many of them — including Republicans — who quietly say they’ll support him for governor next year.
“The problem is, nobody’s got the guts to step out and lead,” Hood said. “…The fact is, we’ve got to drain the swamp in our Legislature.”

Mississippi Legislators Welcome $1.9M in Grants for Distance Education and Telemedicine Programs
U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., and Representatives Gregg Harper, R-Miss., and Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., today welcomed the award of $1,941,653 to support distance learning and telemedicine programs in 15 Mississippi counties. The grants will be awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program.
“Distance learning and telemedicine technologies are a promising way to transcend traditional boundaries and make efficient use of limited resources,” Wicker said. “These targeted investments from the USDA Rural Development program will help connect students to education, job seekers to employment opportunities, and rural patients to high-quality health care for years to come.”
“The common thread in these grants is a high level of cooperation among healthcare providers, educators, cities and counties. They know that expanding distance learning and telemedicine capabilities can provide better education opportunities and medical care to the people in rural areas of our state,” Hyde-Smith said. “These USDA Rural Development grants will help move these goals forward to improve the quality of life in rural Mississippi.”
WTOK – University of Mississippi Medical Center removes CEO
The head of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s adult hospitals and clinics has been removed from her post.
The Clarion Ledger reported that Liz Youngblood was removed from the chief executive’s position Wednesday.
Hospital spokesman Marc Rolph said he could not talk about Youngblood’s departure. A statement said she would remain on staff to complete some projects already are underway.
