The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today celebrated the House passage of Mississippi’s Human Life Equality Act, legislation to stop the practice of discrimination abortions carried out because of a child’s race, sex, disability, or genetic makeup. State Representative Carolyn Crawford, a member of SBA List’s National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, sponsored the bill, which has also been championed by Chairman Nick Bain and House Speaker Philip Gunn. The bill passed by a margin of 79-33 and now advances to the state Senate.
“Mississippi is a strongly pro-life state, and we are encouraged to see pro-life lawmakers put forth compassionate legislation to protect children from lethal discrimination abortion. Abortions carried out because of a baby’s sex, race, or potential disability, such as Down syndrome, is no less than modern-day eugenics,” said SBA List State Policy Director Sue Liebel. “Mississippians believe these babies deserve protection. We are thankful to Judiciary Committee Chairman Bain and Representative Crawford for their pro-life leadership in the house, as well as Senator Jenifer Branning, and Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann for their support of this legislation. SBA List is confident these staunch pro-life advocates will continue to champion this bill until it reaches
Governor Tate Reeves’ desk – a strongly pro-life governor who will not fail to sign it into law.”
Mika Hartman and her son Hudson, who has Down syndrome, recently met with Mississippi legislators to advocate for the Mississippi law. Mika and her husband chose life for Hudson after being encouraged to abort her son due to his disability. Today Hudson is a happy, healthy toddler.
Polling conducted early this year found that 65% of Americans, including 50% of those who identify as “pro-choice,” oppose discrimination abortion carried out because a baby has Down syndrome.
