Mississippi Association of Educators endorses Jim Hood for governor

By: Sarah Ulmer - September 24, 2019

Tuesday, the Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE) announced they were endorsing Jim Hood for governor in the 2019 election.

MAE’s PAC, the MAE Fund for Children & Public Education, has decided to endorse Attorney General Jim Hood as the next governor of the State of Mississippi.

The MAE PAC said in order to secure the endorsement the candidates were asked to submit responses to policy questions and then asked to participate in an interview with members of the PAC. Those on that committee come from groups like certified teachers, education support professionals, higher education faculty members and retired educators across the state.

On receiving the endorsement, Hood said, “I am honored to have the support of the Mississippi Association of Educators in my race to become Mississippi’s next governor. Teachers are the backbone of our society. As governor, I will make our public schools, our public school educators, and our public school students a priority. Our teachers show up for our kids every day. It’s time we showed up for them.”

“Our public school students and educators have been asked to do more with less for far too long,” said MAE President Erica Jones. “Public education in Mississippi is suffering the long-term effects of shamefully low teacher salaries, under-resourced classrooms, and underfunded teacher supply funds. We are facing the most profound teacher shortage crisis in our state’s history. Unless we elect leadership committed to reversing these trends, our struggles to recruit and retain educators and to provide the kinds of opportunities our students deserve will continue.

“It’s time for those who have been given ample time to prove that public education means more to them than election year pandering to make way for candidates who will prioritize Mississippi’s educators and the 90% of Mississippi children who attend public schools,” she continued. “In the race to become Mississippi’s next governor, that candidate is Attorney General Jim Hood.”
