WDAM – Number of Mississippians working increased in August 2019
The number of Mississippians working increased in August 2019 according to the latest information announced Friday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Mississippi’s unemployment rate in August 2019 was 5.2%, a slight over the month increase of one-tenth of a percentage point from July 2019.
The August 2019 rate is five-tenths of a percentage point higher than a year ago in August 2018, when the rate was 4.7%.

WLBT – Dozens join Youth Climate Strike on the steps of Capitol Building
Chants and signs lead the Youth Climate Strike on the steps of the State Capitol Friday.
Some of the demonstrators, like Tracy Arnett, drove from Starkville to support the cause.
“It’s really and truly about the only issue that truly does matter because nothing else is going to matter if our planet warms, and our sea levels rise, and we can’t grow food that’s viable,” said Arnett.
Sameer Khan, a high school senior, organized the strike with the help of friends; “and especially now that we’re young people, I think that we have a responsibility. If the adults aren’t going to get it, we have to get it done for them.”

WTOK – President Trump declares eight MS counties federal disaster areas
President Donald Trump has declared Clay, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lowndes, Monroe, Sharkey, Warren and Yazoo counties federal disaster areas.
The disaster declaration is in response to tornadoes, severe storms and flooding that affected the state in late February of this year. The declaration also covers the Yazoo-Basin backwater flooding that affected close to 500,000 acres for over six months.

WTVA – Report: Ed Meek taking back $5.3 million gift to Ole Miss
A big money donor to Ole Miss has pulled his $5.3 million donation to the university after an uproar over a Facebook post he made last year that some considered racist.
The Oxford Eagle reported Friday court documents showed the money by Ed and Becky Meek will be moved to the Tupelo-based CREATE Foundation.
Ed Meek posted on Facebook last September criticisms about overnight activity on the Square in Oxford after home football games. That post included pictures of two scantily clad women, who were black.
