SEC’s Mike Slive hoping for fast resolution in Newton case

The four-day-old cloud of suspicion hanging over Auburn and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Cam Newton hangs, just as darkly, over the Southeastern Conference.
A league that has taken great pains to distance itself from a lawless past is dealing with another potential rap sheet entry. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Monday that he hopes the case, revolving around a purported effort to sell Newton’s services out of junior college, is settled “sooner rather than later.”

Slive insisted, however, that the SEC’s football-mad member schools have made great strides in recent years in cleaning up their collective act. “The old days that had the idea of anything goes, I think those days are gone,” he told USA TODAY.
