Friends say Kenny Rogers wouldn’t solicit money for Newton
“Kenny and I’ve been friends since college,” said Chris Goode, a former University of Alabama defensive back. “Kenny’s gotten kids into college that no one’s looked at for the last 15 years. He’ll help a kid who is off the radar, not the kind you’d shop around for money.”
Goode and one-time Crimson Tide teammate Bobby Humphrey believe Rogers has gotten a bum rap since ESPN.com identified him as the man requesting money during Newton’s recruitment by Mississippi State.
“He’s doing this for kids who are not highly regarded, who aren’t going to play in the NFL,” Humphrey said. “He doesn’t do this for high-profile kids.”
