David Jones: Spurrier has Gamecocks dreaming of SEC title
On Saturday, they celebrated well into Sunday morning after the Gamecocks beat Alabama 35-21 with a national television audience and the ESPN GameDay crew watching. It was the first time South Carolina defeated a top-ranked team.
The defending national champions had won 19 straight games and sported the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense. But Stephen Garcia completed 17-of-20 passes with three touchdowns. Marcus Lattimore ran for 93 yards and receiver Alshon Jeffery caught seven passes for 127 yardsSteve Spurrier picked up his 107th SEC coaching victory, to tie Johnny Vaught of Mississippi for No. 2 all-time in league wins. Spurrier took the job in 2005 because of the task it demanded.
