The legend of Mississippi State’s cowbell
A popular legend, according to the Web site, says a jersey cow wandered onto the field during a game against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs “soundly whipped the Rebels that Saturday,” and students immediately adopted the cow as a good luck charm. Eventually, students stopped bringing a cow to games and instead brought a cowbell.
By the 1960s, the cowbell had become Mississippi State football’s cherished symbol, and fans continue to clang the contraptions today at football games and other athletic events..
