The Jeremiah Masoli watch continues to dominate the Out of Bounds airwaves.
With Houston Nutt and Ole Miss pursuing Masoli – this proves, without a doubt,
college football is all about Ws. Can you imagine if Jackie Sherrill was pursuing a
player, like Masoli, who had spent time at a juvenile center and been arrested twice
in 6 months? We would have all out hysteria on message boards……This proves there’s never been any difference in Sherrill,
Nutt, Tuberville, Saban or any of the big-time D-1 coaches. It’s all about the Jimmy”s and Joe”s, not the Xs and the Os. Has Ole
Miss sold out for a big-time talent at QB? Absolutely. Is that what the fans want? Yes.
The “Masoli Effect”
Much has been made of The University of Mississippi’s potential addition of former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Talk radio in Mississippi is abuzz and internet message boards are on the verge of crashing. However, when one takes an analytical approach in assessing what the end result may be, there is only one logical conclusion… it’s much ado about nothing. There will be no discernable rise, much less a meteoric one for Houston Nutt’s program.
I offer the following evidence in why both before, and after, the new Rebel/Muppet/Landshark shows up in Oxford, Ole Miss’s position within the SEC West has already been cast in the same type bronze being utilized in Tuscaloosa. They finish no better than 5th in the division in 2010 and it’s all about the scheduling.
Ole Miss beats Vandy and Kentucky at home with or without Masoli. They are losers at Alabama, at Arkansas, versus Auburn, at Tennesse and at LSU. This leaves UM with a 2-5 conference record with only the Egg Bowl remaining, but let me come back to that…
Now, let’s look at MSU’s 2010 schedule: Auburn, at LSU, Georgia, at Florida, Kentucky, at Bama, Arkansas, and at Ole Miss. Kentucky is the only potential win, save a possible Egg Bowl upset of their in state rival. This leaves MSU with a 1-7 or possibly a 2-6 mark in conference play for the year.
So, while it is certainly interesting fodder for football fans in the state, Masoli under center is, at best, a zero sum gain.
TUSK
In ’09, Mullen inherited mini-me QB Tyson Lee & won 5 games (almost won 7). Mullen squeezed more talent out of Lee than any coach in the SEC would have. Mullen played with what he was dealt & did not panic…why? Because Mullen has confidence, mojo and enough cojonas to actually coach QB’s to win & develop over time.
Contrast that with Nutt’s ole miss teams. Nutt walked into a stacked deck with Jay-Von Snead. Snead fluorished in ’08 but failed to meet expectations in ’09. Snead’s production dropped & his INT’s increased. Why? Because Nutt has proven he can’t and never will develop a QB. There’s a reason why all Arky fans call him the “Quarterback Killa.”
Nutt needs Masoli because Masoli is already developed & needs no coaching. Nutt is either a coward or too lazy to develop or recruit a QB. Nutt doesn’t have the cojonas to play Stanley. I dare him to step up like a man & coach a Tyson Lee style QB in Stanley & then lets see how good his ass is at coaching QB’s?
Maybe the new mascot at ole miss should be a Jellyfish in honor of coach Nutt: no backbone to develop Stanley into an SEC QB!
-WOOF !!!
p.s. – all hail the newly crowed Prince of Darkness of the SEC: Houston Nutt.
From Jay:
I’m not shocked at all that Bert Carruth got on the show this morning and immediately started rationalizing and justifying Masoli’s possible transfer to Ole Miss. If he would have just called it what is, which is all about a 1 year hired gun to come in and win games regardless of character issues, then he would have at least maintained some credibility and not just wasted your and your listeners time this morning.
From Matt:
You said it Bo, all this talk of moral high grounds when all either side is really worried about is WINNING. Nutt wants to keep winning, Woof and the rival fan base(s) are worried this will help them produce more Ws. Woof, buddy…fear is a stinky cologne. Its nice to be hated again.

From Richard:
one hang up i have; i don’t understand how nutt and company can dismiss a patt patterson from the squad for violating team drug policies and then bring in Masoli, who was dismissed from Oregon for the same shenanigans…..talk about a double standard. just shows you how desperate the rebs are at the QB position because they werent brimming over the top with receivers either
