The game came with some controversy because Auburn and Utah were left out despite perfect regular-season records. Both teams won their bowl games, leaving college football with three undefeated teams when the season ended. If USC’s appeal fails, though, neither the Tigers nor the Utes will be recognized as that year’s champ.
“Most people would think Auburn would be the team,” Hancock said. “But how would they have done against Oklahoma or another team?”
