Agents, Parties and SEC Football
To say that the Southeast Conference has dominated college football in recent years is sort of like describing midtown Manhattan during this month’s heatwave as “balmy and fragrant.” It’s factually correct, but the sense of magnitude is so absent as to make the statement almost untrue. The SEC has so dominated college football that mega-programs such as Florida, Louisiana State and Alabama increasingly represent everything that’s good and bad about the game. So it makes sense that SEC media days, which began Wednesday, were extra hectic this year. “Pack journalism converged with rabid fans camping out in a hotel lobby,” Jon Solomon writes in the Birmingham News. “Picture Super Bowl media days marrying Mardi Gras.” This time, though, a rash of scandals involving SEC programs and players have ensured that the assembled media isn’t just there to discuss recruits and schedules.
