NFL commissioner Roger Goodell surprised many on Super Bowl Sunday when he told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that the league will look into a possible ban on the three-point stance for offensive lineman.
The idea, he said, would be to lessen the violent collisions linemen have on every play – thus lessening their chances for short-term and long-term concussion-type injuries. Besides, Goodell suggested, many teams have gone away from the three-point stance anyway.
It all made sense – until it was run by a few prominent high school coaches, all of which were fundamentally opposed to the idea.
Olney (Md.) Good Counsel’s Bob Milloy, Batesville (Miss.) South Panola’s Lance Pogue and Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber Chris Wood all rejected Goodell’s idea.
“We like to run the football,” Pogue said. “To do that effectively you have to get your hands in the ground and push people around.”
