What we learned: SEC teams have Texas ties
Texas exes
It’s a big ol’ backyard barbeque in the SEC this weekend. They’ll get together in Baton Rouge and Oxford, where they’ll swap war stories about Bear Bryant’s tackle-eligible play that beat Ole Miss in the 1960s, and about Kevin Faulk’s magical performance to beat No. 1 Florida in 1997 in the loudest night in any stadium in the league. Ever.
Then those loud and proud SEC snobs should give a long look to Texas. Because this day has burnt orange painted all over it.
Ole Miss’ hopes of beating Alabama for first time since 2003 – and only the third time in the last 16 years – depend on the play of former Texas quarterback Jevan Snead. Florida’s hopes of winning at LSU for the first time since 2003 likely hinge on the play of backup quarterback John Brantley, who committed to Texas early in the recruiting process before eventually signing with the Gators in 2007.
Snead left Texas after his freshman season in 2006 because some guy named McCoy had a firm grip on the job. Brantley originally didn’t sign with Florida in 2007 because some guy named Tebow was in the early stages of becoming the game’s greatest player.
And now here they are, in the biggest games of their college lives.
“I still have a lot of close friends there at Texas,” Snead said. “I’d love to meet up with them in a bowl game.”
The first step is beating Alabama on Saturday.
