Ellis Johnson, during his four seasons at Mississippi State under Sylvester Croom, became well-acquainted with Ole Miss as an archrival, the team you had to beat to be a success.
Not that Johnson got that wrapped up in the rivalry part of it.
“The longer I am in this business, the less that kind of rivalry thing matters,” Johnson says. “When I was at State, I wanted to beat Ole Miss because they were on our schedule, same as Alabama and Auburn and LSU. Same thing, this week. I don’t get involved in all that hate the way the fans do.”
