Jasper confident he can fill David’s shoes

There haven’t been a lot of moments in the spotlight for Josh Jasper since he arrived at LSU.

There have been a few successful onside kicks and a handful of place-kicks in blowout situations for the junior.

Mostly, though, Jasper has toiled in as much anonymity as you’d expect a backup kicker.

Here’s the rub, though. From last year to now, Jasper goes from unknown to the guy who has to replace a popular kicker who walked away with his name splattered through the LSU record book.

As intimidating as that might seem, Jasper said he is ready for the challenge.

If there’s one thing Jasper has plenty of, it’s confidence and he credits his predecessor, Colt David, for that.

“Ever since I got here, I’ve been looking forward to the chance to take over as the kicker,” said Jasper, who was an all-state kicker at Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., and finished his prep career with a state-record 44 field goals.

“Colt always had a lot of confidence in himself and he thrived off that,” Jasper said.
“As a kicker, you have to have that kind of confidence. The coaches saw it in Colt and they see it in me. I’ve established myself as the lead guy and have been kicking very well and I’ve given the coaches reason to trust me by showing them I’m ready to step up and handle the job.”
