Bill Belichick saves dough by piling up low picks

FOXBORO – Bill Belichick had a draft that fits these troubled economic times yesterday. Value shopping was the order of the day for him.

Finding no one on the board he felt was worth investing the big money that comes with first-round selections after an attempt to move up to No. 8 came up flat on Friday, Belichick twice traded back until he’d moved right out of the first round. That left him with no one in the big-money bracket but still with eight of the top 97 players, an improvement by two from where he started the day.

Belichick’s moves were a cost-efficient solution to not feeling strongly about anybody at the top of what was widely regarded as an odd and somewhat talent-thin group at the elite level.
