ATLANTA – Even the LSU players who did not play Wednesday night were faster than Georgia Tech’s offensive players.
Over and over, LSU players and coach Les Miles credited the Tigers’ scout team after LSU’s dominant, 38-3 laugher victory over the No. 14 Yellow Jackets and their triple-option attack in the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome.
“Jhyryn Taylor and Stevan Riddley were the scout team tailbacks we practiced against,” defensive MVP Perry Riley said. “They were great. They were faster than Tech’s backs.”
Taylor is a true freshman from Franklinton who signed as a wide receiver. Riddley is a redshirt freshman from Natchez, Miss. They tried to imitate Tech’s backs during bowl practices.
“At the first bowl practices, a couple of our defensive ends heads were spinning, those two were so fast,” Riley said. “The game seemed slower than the practices. Our scout team prepared us well.”
Cornerback John Williams, a redshirt freshman from Breaux Bridge, imitated Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt.
“Our offensive scout team gave us every look that we needed,” Miles said. “We really felt we came into the game with an understanding of the speed of the game, and we did.”
Tailback Jonathan Dwyer, Tech’s leading rusher who came into the game averaging 110.7 yards a game, was held to 67 yards on 10 carries. Nesbitt managed his average of 62 yards, but he completed just 8 of 24 passes for 150 yards with one interception by cornerback Chris Hawkins.
