Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom was determined to play two quarterbacks in the Bulldogs’ opening game at Louisiana Tech, but after further review, it appears Wesley Carroll is the man.
Carroll, who started nine games as a true freshman last season, was on the bench in the fourth quarter of State’s 22-14 loss to Louisiana Tech. But Croom said he’ll be under center for Saturday’s home game against Southeastern Louisiana, with Tyson Lee and Chris Relf now dueling for the backup role. The undersized Lee played most of the second half of the Louisiana Tech game.
“Wes Carroll’s our quarterback,” Croom said. “We’re going to win or lose, sink or swim, with him. Until the game is in control, Wes will be out there.”
Carroll completed 12 of 25 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown against Louisiana Tech, but he was intercepted three times.
“It wasn’t a mistake to put Tyson out there,” Croom said. “That may be your opinion. It may be the opinion of some fans, but I’m doing (things) based on what I’ve seen in practice, going into the game.
“Some guys do different things in a game, as opposed to practice. And even in the game, Wes wasn’t having a great night himself.”
