Though you won’t find his name in the phone book under “construction,” Hill Denson is definitely a builder.

Denson, 64, has spent most of the past 42 years as a baseball coach in the state of Mississippi on the high school, college and professional levels. Fourteen of those years were spent building the Southern Miss baseball program into a competitive entity and he has spent the past seven doing the same at Belhaven.

For his achievements in the dugout, Denson will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on Friday at the Jackson Hilton, receiving the honor for his contributions to the game he has been around all his life.

“I’ve just always loved baseball,” said the Bay Springs native, who isn’t sure he deserves the honor. “I’ve always been a part of it and it’s always been a part of my life.

“I never considered myself that worthy.”

But if you take a look at his long list of accomplishments, there shouldn’t be any doubt that Denson definitely merits the induction.

After capping a 15-year career as a high school baseball coach with a 1981 state championship for Callaway High School, Denson joined the college baseball ranks in 1984 to lead a Southern Miss program in dire need of some direction.
