Rebels’ strong safety expects defense to be a strength
Jamarca Sanford has started 31 games in an Ole Miss uniform, so while it might seem like he’s been playing for the Rebels forever, the senior strong safety said recently his career has flown by.
“It comes quick,” Sanford said. “When I first made it, everybody used to tell me, ‘I’m a senior. Better enjoy it while it lasts. Your senior year is going to come quick.’ Now it’s here. I wouldn’t change anything. I’d just win a couple more games since I’ve been here. Well, a lot more games, but I’ve enjoyed it.”
In three years, Sanford has recorded 205 total tackles, 1.5 quarterback sacks, two caused fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 10 pass break-ups. Those statistics don’t mean much. Instead, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound Batesville, Miss., native is hung up on the fact that the Rebels have won just three Southeastern Conference games. Going into his senior season, Sanford wants that to change, and he believes that it will.
“The last three or four years I’ve been here, we’ve been feeling confident,” Sanford said. “But I feel we have something special going. We feel like we can go in this year and put together the pieces we’re missing from the puzzle.”
Asked for specific reasons why he believes 2008 will be different, Sanford didn’t hesitate.
