Same ol’ Sylvester
HOOVER, ALA. — Sylvester Croom moved South with his golf clubs, but they weren’t a huge part of his first four summers as the Mississippi State football coach.
The most common explanation was a sore knee and shoulder, which underwent various operations. Larry Templeton, the former MSU athletic director and Croom’s friend, never thought that was the whole story.
“It was more of him always thinking ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that,'” he said.
So fast-forward to this past June, a few months removed from MSU’s eight-win season, its first winning year since 2000. There Croom was, on vacation in Green Bay, Wis., sneaking out by himself on afternoons to Thornberry Creek Country Club, hitting two or three balls at a time.
