Big draw for colleges: Summer camps lure students
Between May and August, summer camps will bring 10,000 students to Mississippi College and about $500,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi.
And while the money earned can vary greatly – from a couple of thousand dollars for day camps hosted by Alcorn State University’s athletic department to the more than $985,000 USM pulled in last summer – Mississippi colleges say the camps generate little profit but help recruit students and help keep some departments running during the summer.
“This is critical to sustaining residence life enterprise during the summer when regular student occupancy is low,” Joe Paul, USM’s vice president of student affairs, said in a statement.
