Godwin to take UCF post – LSU loses another asst coach
OMAHA, Neb. — A little more than a week after finding out he was losing his recruiting coordinator and pitching coach to the University of Central Florida, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri learned his hitting coach is going there, too.
Cliff Godwin, who followed Mainieri and Terry Rooney from Notre Dame to LSU two years ago, will be Rooney’s top assistant at UCF. Rooney, 34, accepted the job of head coach of the Golden Knights on June 12, the day the Tigers arrived in Omaha for the College World Series.
They left Saturday, but not before Mainieri told them of Godwin’s plans.
Godwin, 30, said he was excited about the opportunity to work for Rooney at Central Florida.
“Terry’s one of my best friends,” Godwin said. “For me professionally, it’s the right move at this time.”
