Ex-MSU coach rips AD on hire

Ron Polk built a baseball dynasty at Mississippi State University with top teams playing in front of thousands at a stadium that eventually bore his name.

If he has his way, it won’t be like that much longer.

Angered so much by MSU’s hiring of University of Kentucky coach John Cohen to replace him instead of MSU assistant Tommy Raffo, Polk lashed out Friday at incoming MSU athletic director Greg Byrne, who led the search.

Polk, 64, said he’ll ask the school to take his name off Dudy Noble Field Polk-DeMent Stadium.

“I just got slapped in the face, punched in the stomach,” he said. “All my coaches have been slapped in the face, punched in the stomach by a young athletic director who has absolutely no clue what he’s doing.”

Polk said he plans to send Byrne a letter that states “within 48 hours, my name comes off the stadium, comes off the centerfield fence, the banner off the concourse comes down. It will remain down until (Byrne) gets fired or somebody runs him off.
