Most of the cities and towns across Mississippi are holding municipal primary elections today. The polls are open from 7am to 7pm.
These elections are for mayor and city council / board of aldermen or selectmen, and in some areas police chief, city clerk or more.
Municipal office holders have a direct impact on citizens every single day, perhaps more so than their state or federal counterparts, from roads to water and garbage to zoning and development to recreation and beautification. Placing qualified, competent men and women in these offices is a must if your city or town is to thrive over the next four years.
And, despite what you may hear, party does matter even at the local level. There is a Republican or Democrat way to fix a pothole, mainly in terms of fiscal responsibility, their taxing and spending philosophies, and the overall principles these elected officials employ to do their jobs on a daily basis.
It’s often been said that there’s only two themes in politics: 1). You’ve never had it so good, or 2). It’s time for a change.
The truth often lies somewhere in the middle.
Every election cycle you hear the old political question: Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago? Or, to put it another way in municipal terms… Is the community better today than it was 4 years ago?
If the answer is yes and “you’ve never had it so good,” then you’re likely to dance with the ones who brought you there.
If the answer is no, then “it’s time for a change.”
Either way, today you can let your voice be heard in your city or town’s primary election.
Also, remember to go back to the polls on June 6th for the municipal general election.
