But in spite of those visible warts on Mississippi’s face, I found myself this week once again seeing a Mississippi that I know and deeply appreciate that it seems few in the national media ever see. It is, by and large, a good place populated by good people — and people whose behavior rarely fails to surprise, engage, and often bewilder…

…Mississippi is a better place populated by better people than our political battles often belie. After many years writing about this place, trust me, I see the warts. But I also see the beauty of our contradictions and our triumphs. And on matters of conscience, Mississippi’s crossroads still beckons to us all.
