Sex education changes proposed
A Senate bill would revamp Mississippi’s public school sex education programs and calls for the use of proven “personal responsibility” education programs instead of the “abstinence” or “abstinence-plus” programs currently called for by law.
“Abstinence only and abstinence plus — those labels are confusing,” said Sen. Sally Doty, R-Brookhaven, author of Senate Bill 2413. “We want to call this personal responsibility education.
It would include teaching negotiation and decision making skills … The (Department of Education) and Department of Health would have to approve the curriculum, evidence based that it works, and there are plenty out there even abstinence-only that have been proven to work.”
