House moves to ban Confederate flags at Vicksburg cemetery
The House has voted to ban the display of Confederate flags at historic federal cemeteries in the deep South…
…The proposal by California Democrat Jared Huffman would block the Park Service from allowing private groups from decorating the graves of southern soldiers with Confederate flags in states that commemorate Confederate Memorial Day. The cemeteries affected are the Andersonville and Vicksburg cemeteries in Georgia and Mississippi….
…Wednesday morning U.S. Rep. Bennie G. Thompson released the text of a letter sent to the chairwoman and ranking member of the Committee on House Administration.
The letter states the Confederate flag should not be displayed and a resolution he introduced would “remove all imagery of the Confederate battle flag including that of the Mississippi state flag,” Thompson said.
“The Confederate States of America was a treasonous group of rebels who made every effort to tear apart this country and continue their traditions of enslavement and oppression of Black people,” Thompson said.
