BILL ENDING COMMON CORE HEADS TO GOVERNOR’S DESK
JACKSON – Legislation that will lead to the end of Common Core education standards in Mississippi passed the Senate today, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said.
The bill also prohibits the Mississippi Department of Education from using the PARCC assessment in local schools beginning with the 2015-16 academic year. Specifically, the bill says, “the State Board of Education cannot require school districts to administer the multistate PARCC test or any other consortia-developed test.”
“This legislation will end Common Core and allow Mississippians to create strong academic standards that are among the highest in the nation,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said.
Senate Bill 2161 heads to Gov. Phil Bryant for consideration. The bill establishes a task force comprised of educators, parents and subject matter experts to evaluate and create the highest level of standards in the nation for Mississippi.
Included in the bill:
? Establish the Mississippi Commission for College and Career Readiness.
? End relationship with Common Core and PARCC.
? Add protections for student data.
