Alternative to Mississippi school funding amendment added to November ballot, see how they voted
JACKSON, Mississippi — The Mississippi ballot this November will list two proposed state constitutional amendments dealing with education funding.
Critics say having two proposals on the same ballot is a formula for confusion, and the complexity of the state’s law governing initiatives makes it unlikely either proposal will succeed.
Initiative 42 got on the ballot after more than 116,000 people signed petitions. It would require Mississippi to fund an “adequate and efficient system of free public schools.” If legislators fail to provide that, people could ask a chancery judge to order the state to provide the money.
The other proposal is an alternative written by the Legislature. It would require funding of an “effective system of free public schools.” It would not allow an appeal to chancery court.
