Santorum backs McDaniel in Miss.
FIRST IN SCORE — SANTORUM BACKS MCDANIEL: Just five days before GOP Sen. Thad Cochran and state Sen. Chris McDaniel face off in the Mississippi Senate primary, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is throwing his weight behind McDaniel, calling him a “proven conservative who will be guided by the U.S. Constitution.” It’s a welcome boost for McDaniel, who’s been bogged down by the controversy over an alleged illegal intrusion of Cochran’s wife in her nursing home. McDaniel has said repeatedly that he wasn’t involved, using a TV ad this week to call the Cochran’s campaign suggestions that he was “outrageous.” Santorum addressed that in his endorsement: “As is often the case in closely-watched campaigns, this race has succumbed to the distractions of unfortunate political theater,” he says. “It is time to return to a discussion about the issues that matter to the future of this country.”
