PAUL HAMPTON: More common ground, less Common Core
On Wednesday the Democratic Caucus unveiled an ambitious agenda for the legislative session that’s about two weeks old.
Then they walked up to the House chamber to get pummeled by the Republicans and Gov. Phil Bryant in a contentious vote on drug testing for some welfare recipients.
It was red meat thrown to the most conservative of GOP factions. The Democrats didn’t even get a bone. Thirteen of their proposed amendments to the bill were soundly defeated.
It looks like a long three months ahead for the Democrats.
As the first bills were filed last week, Rep. David Baria of Waveland predicted a bloodbath in the House over “mean bills” he said had no chance of passing the Senate.
