Cochran Gains Super-PAC Help in McDaniel Battle in Mississippi

Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, facing a vigorous challenge in the Republican Party’s primary election, is getting help from a super-political action committee.

Cochran, in the Senate for more than 35 years, “has been very effective in his representation of Mississippi,” Brian Perry, director and treasurer of the committee, Mississippi Conservatives, said in an e-mail to Political Capital. Perry, the managing partner of Jackson-based Capstone Public Affairs, praised Cochran’s work on agriculture and appropriations policy and in helping Mississippi’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“His seniority, values and reputation in the U.S. Senate can make a significant difference for the State of Mississippi in the next six years, which would be magnified if Republicans do retake control of the Senate,” said Perry, a former political director for the Mississippi Republican Party. “The worst outcome for Mississippi would be for Senator Cochran to lose in the primary and Democrats to have a fighting chance to repeat their wins in similar situations in other states.”

Cochran’s opponent in the June 3 primary is state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who is attacking Cochran’s Republican credentials on fiscal policy. McDaniel has backing from the Senate Conservatives Fund, which is also trying to unseat Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and the Club for Growth.
